Todays’ children and young adults live in a world where the Internet and mobile devices will play a major part in their lives in both their education and at home. Child safety and protection online is, therefore, an extremely important issue. Just this week, for example:
- The NSPCC has warned of record numbers of online child grooming crimes being recorded by police in the UK in the last three years.
- The Age Appropriate Design Code, from the Information Commissioner's Office, has come into force. It sets out 15 standards for companies who make/design anything from apps and connected toys to online games, education websites, and streaming services, or for any services used by children – including social media! The code ensures that companies build-in data protection of young people as a priority, from the design upwards. The Information Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, said: “The internet was not designed with children in mind and I think the Age Appropriate Design Code will go a long way to ensure that kids have the right kind of experience online."
